CCS/CC2640R2F: Crash on building project for a CC2640R2F on Debian Testing

Hi,

when building my project for the CC2640R2F Code Composer Studio freezes sometimes at some point while building/compiling. It seems lik CCS is fully frozen and does not respond on any user inputs. As far as i could check it seems to be something with updating the GUI or similar. When building from command line everything works fine. Even when i open the terminal/console inside CCS in a seperate window it seems to be better (so far). If the console is inside a tabbed panel in the main-window of CCS it seems like breaking much more often.

I've run CCS from command line and couldn't see any messages or error logs. I've noticed that when i kill CCS the workspace is blocked. I can't restart CCS immediately but after a few tries.

Any ideas about the causes? Thanks in advance.

Hi Jan,
Please specify which exact CCS version you are using and which Debian distribution. Also, how frequent is this freeze and is is the occurrence variable?

I'm using debian testing with CCS 9.0.1.

In the worst case i'd say it crashes 3 out of 5 times. If the console is open inside a seperate window it didn't crash so far. But i have to say i've minimized the output and disabled the "show advice on build" option in the settings.

Can you provide the output of:

lsb_release -a

And does the issue happen with a specific project or it impacts any project?

Right, it's debian buster (testing) which is in its frozen state.

I'll check the output later, i'm currently not at my computer anymore.

It happens on every CCS Project i'm working on.

Hi Jan,
I have not had much luck installing debian testing on a VM. I keep getting an installation failure that I cannot recover from.

I am planning on freeing up a machine where I can do a native installation. Sorry for the delay.

No need to rush. My current workaround with the detached console-view seems to be quite stable. It would be nice to habe a solution though.

Hi Jan,
I was finally able to set up a native Debian buster machine and installed CCSv9.0.1 on it. I imported several SDK examples and tried building them. It was mostly fine with the exception on one time when the GUI appeared to freeze and didn't repaint properly. I had to force kill CCS. I wonder if this is what you saw. However, this didn't happen often - only that one time. You may want to try increasing the max heap size as mentioned in the below thread and see if that helps at all:

It seems like increasing the max heap size helped a lot. It has been set to 2GB initially and i increased it to 4GB. After that the crash didn't appear anymore.

Maybe that's the solution. At least it's working by now.
