CCS/MSP430F235: LDC1614

Part Number: MSP430F235
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LDC1614

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hi,

i need to use external coil with LDC1614 sensor and i have some questions about the specifications of the coil.

1. if the coil has a core inside it how can we shape the coil about a metal core as example, is the shape of turns affect the functionality of the coil or not !

2. if we need to design the coil with more than 8 planner layers is this will make a problem in the sensor or the ability to measure inductance from a coil such like this i mentioned.

  • Hello,

    1. You can use magnetic core inductors with the LDC1614, but we do not have a design guide for them. We recommend PCB inductors because they are easier to customize and have good board-to-board tolerances. For all types of coils, the sensing distance is based on the outer diameter of the sensor.

    2. As long as the LC tank is within the sensor frequency range and the sensor Rp range specified in the electrical characteristics tab of the datasheet, the LDC1614 will be able to drive the sensor. You can use this excel calculator tool to help design your PCB sensors and check that they are within the device's design space. For wire wound coils, if you know the inductance and the series resistance you can use the calculator tool to check the design space.

    Best Regards,
