When does support for CCS4.x end thus forcing one to adopt CCS 5.x

Hi

I noticed an increasing number of forum users are CCSv5.x

When does support for CCS4.x end thus forcing one to adopt CCS 5.x? (i.e. when do you guys tell us "that has been fixed in CCS5.x, to try it"

Are 4.x bug fixes migrated to 5.x automatically? (just wondering that should I switch to 5.1, will it have all the fixes 4.2.1 has).

Tried to find info about what the CCS migration strategy is, but no find in the links below.

  • Eddie,

CCSv5.1 will be released in the fall.  At that point it will become our standard product.  After a major release like that we typically will do a couple of additional service releases on the previous product to fix critical issues.

We still have a number of service releases queued up for CCSv4.x.  However even now you will hear us say certain things will be fixed in 5.1 versus 4.x, especially items that are dependent on a new Eclipse release which would only happen in 5.x.

The reality is that people use older versions for years after we have released them.  On this forum we still see a lot of 3.3 related questions and lately there have even been some Code Composer (prior to Studio) questions from a 12 year old product.  We still do our best to answer those questions.

Fixes we make in 4.x will be ported to 5.x, there will be the odd exception but that is the general strategy.

Typically the thing that most frequently requires someone to switch to a new version is device support.  Once the service releases stop for 4.x all new device support will be on 5.x.

    John

  • Hi John

So you are saying that 5.0.x is as mature in terms of functionality and bug fixes as 4.2.x is?

    When you say

, I'd like to get a better handle on when "will be" is. If the fixes on 4.2.1 are already in 5.0.x, I'll be less fearful of making the switch sooner.

    Cheers

  • Eddie,

CCSv5.0.x is not as mature as 4.2.x and is missing a few features.  If it had everything already then we would be releasing it to everyone now.  5.0.x is targeted at a sub-set of users on a sub-set of devices.

4.2.1 fixes are present in 5.0.1.  However as 5.0.x is targeted at a specific set of people we will not be porting all fixes to this stream going forward.  They will be ported to the 5.1.x stream.  So if you wanted to move to 5.x and keep up with fixes you could go to 5.0.1 now but by approximately May you would need to move over to 5.1.x.

    Regards,

    John

May? But in your original email you said

    Confused...

  • Eddie,

The formal 5.1.0 release will be in the fall however we will not be porting all fixes from 4.2.x to 5.0.x.  We will be porting all fixes to the 5.1.x stream.  Releases from the 5.1.x stream are being made available.  The first alpha is up now but I wouldn't use that for real development yet, I would wait a few months.

    Regards,

    John
