Compiler/MSP432E401Y: How to access External SRAM over SPI

Part Number: MSP432E401Y

Tool/software: TI C/C++ Compiler

Hi,

I am using External SRAM part # IS62WVS2568GBLL-45NLI-TR with MSP432E401Y MCU (FreeRTOS).

1.Can you give the procedure for adding external SRAM over SPI.

2.Can you give use cases for external SRAM over SPI.

3.How to store variables at the specific location in external RAM.

4.Is it required to configure on .cmd file and GEL file for access to the external SRAM?.

Regards

  • Hello,

    Anyone, Can you support me?

  • Hello Mathankumar,

I apologize for this post falling through the cracks.  Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with interfacing with External SRAM via SPI on the MSP432E4.  When I was doing some searching, I found your previous post on this topic: https://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/msp430/f/166/t/947433

James mentions, I don't think this is possible without the EPI interface, which can provide access to the MCU's address and Data bus.

With a Serial SRAM, you will have to write and read from it manually using the SPI.  Usually when you write to the SRAM, you will give it an address and then data.  And when you read, you give it an address, then it returns the data.  Also, You would have to copy this data into local RAM to do any processing on it.

External SRAM would mostly be used some sort of data logging or buffering.  For example, if you were going to take a ton of ADC measurements and then process them but didn't have space, you could store each reading in external SRAM and then fetch and process them in batches.

    I hope this was useful.

    Thanks,

    JD

  • Hi JD,

    Thanks for your reply.

Do you have any references for the above-mentioned way to access external SRAM like code, document, etc?

    Thanks

    Mathan

  • Hey Mathan,

Unfortunately, I can't really think there is anything for RAM use specifically.  Here are most several code examples for the MSP432E410Y.  There are a few generic SPI examples for the MSP432E401Y that could be used as a starting point for communication, like SPImaster and SPILoopback.

It's not all that related, but we have a FATSD example.  This example implements a FAT file system on an external non-volatile SD card.

    Good luck,

    JD
