Eclipse, MacOS

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO

This is almost certainly an Eclipse issue, however I thought I'd ask in this forum to see if anyone has come across a solution.

Since upgrading to Big Sur (I just realized CCS10 is not yet supported on Big Sur), I can no longer move and dock ANY window within CCS (Eclipse). Grabbing any window tab (e.g., open editors, Outline, Call Hierarchy, etc.) and trying to drag it has no effect - the window will not move or detach. It is possible to right-click on a window tab and select Detach, but then it is not possible to dock the detached window anywhere.

I am running CCS 10.1.1.00004, and I am not certain if Eclipse installs and uses its own Java JRE or if it relies on the system one (I'm assuming the former). Java on my Mac is /usr/bin/java and is version 1.8.0_151.

Has anyone else seen this and come across a solution or a place to research it? I have found very little on the web about this, which I find amazing if this is a class problem with Eclipse/Big Sur.

Thanks!

  • Mark,

I can confirm the same on my Big Sur air..  I have seen other issues with Big Sur such as resizing windows compresses or stretches fonts.  Usually clicking around in the window will trigger a refresh.  We typically update Eclipse (beyond fixes) once a year.  So the next one would be CCSv11 mid summer.

I tried running the Eclipse launcher instead of ccstudio.app and I see the same thing there so it does look to be an Eclipse thing.  I will dig around some more.  I will file a bug to track this issue on our side.

  • Mark,

Here is the bug ID to track the issue.  https://sir.ext.ti.com/jira/browse/EXT_EP-10249

CCSv10.3 will be doing more testing on Big Sur but depending on where the problem is it might not be fixed until 11.0.  If the issue requires a major Eclipse or JRE upgrade that might push it to 11.

    John

  • It seems to work fine on my MBA with Big Sur

  • John,

Thanks for looking into this and creating a ticket for tracking the issue. This resolves the issue to the degree it can be - hopefully something on the Eclipse or JRE side is being worked on due to other complaints.

  • John,

I noticed that the above defect you entered has been accepted and is scheduled to be addressed in CCS v11.0. I am curious, is there a CCS beta program for early access? I would love the ability to use CCS with this issue addressed, even if it is in beta-level code.

I have noticed what you mention about sizing and refresh, as well as sometimes loosing the left side editor line numbering.

    Thanks,

    Mark

  • Mark,

I can see if we can add you to a list for the beta.  We often don't do a public beta but it would be good to have more real big sur usage.  Currently we are still working on CCSv10.3 which is due out early April.  CCSv11.0 is looking like June.

With CCSv11 we will be picking up a new Eclipse and JRE which should help with the Big Sur issues.

    Regards,

    John

  • John,

Thanks for considering that. I would definitely use a beta release and give feedback about any remaining issues I see, so sign me up if a "private beta" program is available.

Also, I just installed Eclipse 2020-12 (4.18.0) Embedded C/C++ package to see what that looks like. I am able to move and dock windows at will, and there doesn't seem to be any resizing/refresh issues that I can tell. So it seems that eclipse org has solved most of the Big Sur issues.

    Thanks again.

  • That is great to hear.  That should do the trick for CCSv11.
