TIDA-01023: Issue reading longer record lengths from TSW14J57 ROM in HSDC Pro after externally triggering

Part Number: TIDA-01023
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADC12DJ3200, , TSW14J57EVM

Hello,

I have a system with four ADC12DJ3200 and each has a connected TSW14J57 FPGA board. I am using HSDC Pro to connect to each board, configure each board and arm it for an external trigger, then disconnect from the board. I do this for all four boards before sending my trigger pulse. Then, I go back through and read the data from each board.

I am able to successfully do this for record lengths up to 2^17 samples. When I try to use 2^18 samples only a fraction of the anticipated data is returned.

This issue only happens if I disconnect from the board in HSDC Pro before sending the trigger. I can recreate the issue with a single board, so I don't think it has to do with my four board configuration.

So I arm the board for external trigger, disconnect, and send the trigger. When I reconnect to the board it says something like "Trigger received. Reading data from ROM." This happens immediately on reconnecting to the board. It seems like there may be a default setting in HSDC Pro that is limiting the record length, and since the reading of  the ROM data happens immediately, there is no time for me to change that setting.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Thank you,

Alex

  • Hi Alex,

If you are following the TIDA-01023 design, it shows you required individual HSDC pro for each capture card (TSW14J56/57) to operate in primary (trigger generation) and secondary (trigger receiver) mode. I think, I am not clear with your setup (connect and disconnect external trigger from board) and would be great, if you can share the setup block diagram here (or my email id - ajeet.p@ti.com ) to reply you better on your queries.

Regarding the record length it is depends on the DDR memory, which is supported by TSW14J56 or TSW14J57EVM.

  • Hi Ajeet,

Thank you for the response. I will send you a block diagram as soon as I can.

My configuration is like the TIDA-01023 design document, except I am using four ADC12DJ3200 boards (each with an associated TSW14J57) instead of just two and I am using all four of the boards in secondary (trigger receiver) mode. I am using an external DG535 pulse generator to send them trigger signals. I think the TSW14J57 only has three trigger output channels. This is not enough to trigger all four of my boards so I cannot operate like the document suggests using one board in primary (trigger generation) mode.

Regardless, I do not believe my trigger configuration is the issue. I am able to trigger the system consistently.

If you are following the TIDA-01023 design, it shows you required individual HSDC pro for each capture card

Ah, so it seems the intended solution for my four capture card system would be to use four computers.

I am able to use a single computer and collect simultaneously triggered data from four capture cards at 2^17 samples record length. I would like to understand why, using the same procedure, I can only read a fraction of the expected data at 2^18 samples record length.

I can successfully get desired 2^19 samples from a single board if I leave HSDC connected to it while triggering. Is there a difference in how the data is saved on the board when it is triggered with HSDC connected versus when it is triggered without HSDC connected? is that where the DDR memory limitation comes in? What is the max record length for the TSW14J57?

    Thank you,

    Alex

  • Hi Alex,

I believe when you are using single computer for each board, their capture trigger timeout depends on the sample record length. As you increase the sample record length, you see the data read issue.

It should be completely depends on the TSW14J57EVM and HSDC Pro tool. I would be recommending to reach out to TI high speed data converter team, they can support you better on this.

I can be suggested to try this capture issue with 2 ADC EVM and separate HSDC Pro with HSDC Pro trigger at various sample record length. It can give better idea on trigger issue / capture issue with 4 ADC EVM using single computer.
