Dear All,

I am Developing a USB C which I will use as a Power Delivery max 18W (12V/1.5A) and data Transmission. I am Using TPS65981_2_6_7_8 Application Customization 6.1.2 tools for programming. Now I am in APP Mode to modify my requirement into the tool. Can someone tell me for my application which option I should select ? I need your help. If you make a screen shoot step by step, then It will understandable for me.

Hi Rajat,

I would recommend using the TPS25750 for your design as this is our newest device for PD applications without Alt Mode support. Also, I would recommend watching these videos as they will clear up a lot of USB Type-C and PD aspects as well: https://training.ti.com/how-evaluate-and-configure-our-usb-type-c-pd-controllers

The GUI for TPS25750 is also much simpler and it consists of few questions for your design and from there you can generate the binary for your application and do not need to configure the registers manually.

Hi Hari,

I can not change the controller tps65981. Can you tell me the procedure how i can configure the option according my application. Because I can not understand the all option.

Hi Rajat,

Could you please confirm again you are using this GUI: https://www.ti.com/tool/TPS6598X-CONFIG

The GUI should look like this:

For updating the flash, you can use the GUI and go to Binary option to save the low region binary which you will need to program to the EEPROM that is connected to the PD controller. Please refer to section 10.2.1.2.1 of the datasheet for more details on this.

I have seen PP_5V0 is disable by default. But I want to use it. Moreover, I have to change the register value somewhere else. But I could not understand where should I change it ?

Can you tell me as soon as possible. I badly need the information.

Hi Rajat,

Please see the TRM document as it highlights all of the registers with the bits specified:

I have attached the screenshot here of where you would need to adjust the PP_5V0 in register 0x28. I suspect your PD controller may be in a default configuration. Are you using an EEPROM in your design? If a valid patch configuration isn't loaded from an EEPROM or a Host first, then you will not be able to adjust any registers in a default configuration.

Could you upload your schematic here so I could take a look?

I have seen the controller is in APP Mode. That is why I want to make small change and load the updated flash. Like I want to change (TPS65982->TPS65981) the Device ID.

Can you tell me how I can make this ?

Hi Rajat,

You will need to get out of debug mode, are you connected to the PD controller via an Aardvark or similar?

Once you open the GUI, you can create a new project with the configurations you would like. The GUI will not be connected to the PD controller when you first open it so you are able to edit those fields. Then, you can click on binary and then Flash from current project. This way if you have an adaptor connected to your board connecting to the EEPROM, it will be programmed to the configurations you have set and the next time the PD controller powers on, your new configs will be loaded.

yes ! I connected FTDI adaptor. can you give me screen shot step by step from the tools. You have seen my schematic. I have to do PD from the controller. can you help me. I could not understand t to change the staff from tools and execute to the controller.

Hi Rajat,

This register can not be modified as this is the hardware and firmware version of the device that you are debugging. It looks like you have the TPS65982 in your design not the TPS65981. In general, you will need to exit the debug mode on the GUI to make any changes to the registers that you would like to later flash.

Your GUI should start out like this after you've created a new project:

From there you can edit the registers of the PD controller by going to the Port Settings Tab. Once you've made your configuration changes, since you have a FTDI adaptor to connect to the EEPROM of your PD controller, you can save these configurations by going to Binary --> Flash from current project:

Thank you for your reply. I could not understand which option should I change and which one keep remain default? I Think you have my schematic in previous comments. I want to supply 18W max (12V/1.5A). Can you tell me which option should I make change?

Hi Rajat,

When you create a new project, most settings should remain as default. However, to source 18W, 12V/1.5A, please change the TX Source Capabilities register 0x32. Other than that, please also make sure the PPHV path is enabled in 0x28.

Hi Rajat,

Yes, both PP_5V0 and PP_HV should be enabled.

For the PDOs, yes you will need 2 PDOs, to meet the PD spec. If your device will be sourcing more than 5V, then you will need the 5V PDO in additional to the other PDO that you would like to source.
