PMP30092: Power supply for thermal printer

Hi Team,

Our customer is designing an AC/DC power supply with the following specifications.

Input voltage: 90V to 265 AC
Output Voltage: 23V
Output current: 6.25A, peak current 14A for 2 seconds
Topology: Flyback
Operating temperature: -10C to 50C
Output ripple: 200mVpp
Efficiency: >85%
Output tolerance: +/-3%
Output short circuit protection
Application: Thermal printer

Our customer is considering the PMP30092 reference design. Can you please confirm if this device fits the customer's requirements? Is it capable of supplying 14A peak current for 2 seconds? If not, can you please suggest other device that he may use?

Hi Danilo,

unfortunately the PMP30092 reference design cannot provide a load current of 14A for 2 seconds, because the output peak power of 344W is too high but there are a few designs in this power range that have been published on ti.com.:

Thank you for your suggestions. Our customer has a follow up inquiries below.

Thank you very much for your proposals. Very appreciated.

From the 4 proposals, I can see that 3 have a nominal power output as much as the design target peak output power (300-350W approx). This is a big cost/size concern, since the power supply during nominal operation will consume just 150W. Actually our customer is working with a power supply of 150W .

Therefore I have 2 more questions

1. It is possible to use a power supply of 150W nominal output and add “specific” circuit to cover the output peak current demand ? For a duty cycle of 50%, how much would be the longest reasonable peak time ?

2. For the UCC28633 , supply would be acceptable 14A @23V peak for 0,300ms 50% duty cycle?

in general, the bandwidth determines the response time of the controller to load transients. Let’s assume a bandwidth of 1kHz then it takes about 1ms.With a load step that lasts 0.3ms, the energy first comes out of the output capacitor. If for example a 2mF output capacitance is used, then you can expect a voltage drop of >2V with a 14A load step for 0.3ms. So, to reduce the voltage drop, the output capacitance must be increased, which of course increases the cost.
