Thanks for your post. I am not much of a battery expert but the answer to the question is related to the internal resistance of the different battery types. It is my understanding that lithium coin cell batteries have lower internal resistance, so they would actually be better suited to a current burst of the system. So I would say switching to Alkaline would not eliminate the need for the bulk capacitance. I recommend you research the batteries more on your side if you really want a definitive answer.
