TIDA-01385: Using multiple super capacitors

Part Number: TIDA-01385
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24640, BQ33100

Hello,
I have a questions regarding TIDA-01385 reference design for energy harvesting. This reference design is intended to power a single supercapacitor. I am currently working on an application where multiple super capacitors are to be used to provide power over a longer interval.
Would this design also be applicable here to use multiple capacitors in series instead of one or should a charge controller like the BQ24640 already be used here?

If several supercapacitors are used, it is recommended to monitor them via a charge control. Here I found the BQ33100 super capacitor health manager. Would this be suitable in combination with the reference design?

Many thanks in advance,

Alexander

  • Hello Alexander,

You can use bq33100 for monitoring series supercapacitors. Use this reference design TIDA-00258 and make adjustments for energy harvesting. I will assign this thread to the charger group who can answer questions regarding how to charge.

  • Hi Alexander,

The reference design you mention was developed outside the battery and super cap charge group.  It appears to be developed for an AC harvester, maybe a vibration source? You will need to repost if you help with TIDA-01385 specifically.

Regardless, the choice of charging IC depends on the input power source (MPP voltage and current), super capacitor max voltage and capacitance and time frame you want the capacitors charged.  The app note at link below summarizes the battery charge group's super cap charging options:
