Hi Ammar,

For your first question, can you elaborate on what the 'port' means? Do you mean a single connector for both speakers? Or mix tweeter and woofer content for a single speaker?

Regarding the digital audio signals, this reference design requires I2S audio format, which is connected to 'I2S-IN' header you can check on schematics page 2. The HDMI controller (not included in the design) should provide these signals to the sound-bar reference design.

1. Regarding first question, Yes, single connector for both speakers (tweeter + woofer).

2. Regarding second question, yes, I have checked the header on schematics pg-2 (I2S-IN). Furthermore, Is there any need for HDMI controller? or simply we can attach the HDMI connector to I2S signals?...Is there any need for I2C signals as a input? because I was checked the NXP design block diagram where I can see three signals for digital input (I2S, I2C, SPDIF)...you can find attached picture.

Please guide me for both questions.

Hi Ammar,

For the speaker connector, you may use any header with a pair of differential pins. I may be missing some background of what kind of speaker you're planning to use, or basically understanding why the current headers would not work?

I think the need for HDMI controller depends on your application. Is it intended to be compatible with standard HDMI output devices? Or the intention is just to use HDMI cable and repurpose it for audio transmission only? As far as I know I2S is not standard in HDMI transmission, you would need to translate HDMI audio data into I2S. Otherwise, you may build a custom system where you use the HDMI cable pins and repurpose for I2S, I2C, etc.

let me introduce the architecture of this design.

I want to plan a (HDMI to audio converter, eARC), where I will attach the HDMI cable connect from TV to this kit (tida-01414) via hdmi connector,,,,I think the HDMI controller is already placed in a TV (Tx side).,,,we will simply attach the connector to this kit where I can send digital signals to this design for audio processing. Secondly, in dolby atmos 5.1.2 configuration, I need 8-output connectors. However, this design has 11 output connectors. That's why I need to combine tweeter + woofer on a single output.

let me share the picture and elaborate.

In the tida-01414 there are separate output connector for tweeter and woofer...but I want both the outputs (tweeter + woofer ) on a single connector.

Yes exactly, it is used for audio transmission only according to dolby atmos (5.1.2) standard......(input: HDMI eARC, Output: 8-XLR Ports)

Hi Ammar,

Some of these speakers with tweeter + woofer have a passive crossover filter inside the box. You may check and if that's the case, you can drive a wide-band (no high or low pass filtering) signal into this speaker with a single amplifier/cable, just consider these speakers are connected in parallel to the output of the amplifier.

Regarding the HDMI side, I'll do some research and come back later with further comments.

thankyou very much for your efforts. You mean simply attach the outputs of (tweeter + woofer) in parallel and place a single ouput connector right?

Secondly, In my understanding the HDMI controller is place inside the TV, we will simply attach the female HDMI eARC connector on this tida-01414 design Pin 14, Pin 19 (Audio return channel) as well as Pin 15, Pin 16 (SCL, SDA) to get the digital audio input (I2S) to this board....anyway I am waiting for the research  and reply

Hi Ammar,

Regarding the speaker, I'm adding a simple block diagram to explain it better, but you don't have to attach the output of two amplifiers together, just use 1 amplifier connected to your speaker. The speaker itself should have the crossover filter.

Regarding HDMI connector, I've got further details as well:

• I2C connections from standard HDMI interface are used for DDC (Display Data Channel) which is generally used to automatically adjust the video resolution based on the graphics adapter. For the I2C configuration of any specific amplifier, DAC, etc, you would need a local processor/controller that's able to send the required I2C settings during power up/initialization. This is not coming from the host HDMI controller on the TV.
• The audio transmitter through HDMI is not directly formatted in I2S or TDM, you must use a digital receiver to then decode this to I2S, TDM or analog signals. There are processors that can do this, or you can also use audio dedicated devices like PCM9211.

1. Regarding speaker setup, let's summarize, according to the block diagram, we will simply place a single output connector after the amplifier on the woofer for both (tweeter + woofer ) right? attached picture
2. Secondly, I am a bit confused about HDMI(eARC) signals. I have attached an NXP dolby soundbar design block diagram. There is no HDMI eARC translator(PCM9211 etc.) in between HDMI and MCU. Direct connectivity from HDMI eARC to MCU (I2S, I2C signals). you can check the block diagram.

You're correct on the speaker connections.

Regarding the HDMI eARC, you may check the details of the block diagram with NXP, as far as I know a direct connection is not feasible unless this is a custom system re-purposing the HDMI cable pins.

• Regarding HDMI eARC, I have studied various blogs/datasheets. In my understanding, HDMI has multiple modes as well as I2S(serial clock, WS, serial data>>LRCLK, BCLK, MCLK) pin mapping between TX to RX. The Host controller will define a mode of working on a specific pinout. Furthermore, I have attached links,you can read out for your reference. Secondly, the PCM5252 is already present in the TI design tida-01414, I think we don't need extra PCM, we need to figure out appropriate connections between tx to Rx(clock, WS, SD). Moreover, I have asked NXP for the design details.

Thanks for sharing your research. from the web article on your second link this seems to be indeed a custom solution using HDMI cable, and it also mentions this is not a standard in the industry and other groups have tried different solutions.

Dear Ivan,

Just like in our design tida-01414, there is an (I2S-IN) header and sending signals(clock, WS, serial data) to all the PCM5252. I have attached a link, You can read this the I2S formatted signals to the PCM for alternative modes of HDMI. However, HDMI has various modes.

Do you know HDMI Holo mode? I think this is Audio transmission mode.

Just to make sure we're not going away from your original question: HDMI eARC is not directly compatible with TIDA-01414. TIDA-01414 suggests using 66AK2G audio SoC to translate HDMI into I2S. Then I2S outputs from 66AK2G is connected to TIDA-01414 through J3 as described in section 3.1: TPA3244 Dolby Atmos Soundbar Reference Design (ti.com)

Regarding this new application from HOLO Audio brand, it seems to be a digital-to-digital converter supporting I2S transmission using HDMI connector, this is an extract included in both these user's manuals. Although this wouldn't be directly compatible with TIDA-01414, as you can see, this HOLO converter outputs differential I2S signals for a single data line, while TIDA-01414 requires 4 data lines.

Unfortunately I'm not aware of any device that performs this kind of specialized translation, at least from audio product portfolio perspective.

TIDA-01414 documentation shows 66AK2Gx EVM as the tool to bridge HDMI to I2S, although this seems fairly more complicated than a device that is strictly dedicated for audio translation.
