TIDA-01620: for display port over USB-C, is there any way to make the USB-C cable length up to 10 meter?

Part Number: TIDA-01620
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB1046A-DCI, TUSB1146, TUSB1064, TUSB564

Hi Madam/Sir,

according to TIDA-01620, it can extend the display port cable from 1-2 meter to 5+ meter.

for our application, the requirements are

- display port over USB-C

- display resolution: 720P30 at least

- cable length: up to 10 meter

- operating temperature: -40C ~ +85C

is there any way to achieve these goals above?

if yes, please share us the solution TI has.

Thank you.

Regards,

Eric Li

For DP over Type-C at -40 to 85C for source side, please check TUSB1046A-DCI, https://www.ti.com/product/TUSB1046A-DCI, or TUSB1146, https://www.ti.com/product/TUSB1146. Both can support 720p30 resolution.

USB-IF has guidelines on USB Type-C cable based on the transfer rate. It dictates that USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) cables should be at most 2 meters, while USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) cables can reach up to 1 meter. For 10m, you would probably need an active cable.

    Thanks

  • Hi David,

    Thanks for your comment.

for an active cable to make DP over USB cable up to 10 meter, please suggest the solution TI has?

furthermore, at device side, have to split up it into DP and USB signals for DP Sink and USB Device, please suggest the solution TI has?

*** Out product group does not have active cable in our product portfolio.

*** On the sink side, you can use TUSB564 (5G USB) or TUSB1064 (10G) USB.

    Thanks

  • Hi David,

    Thanks for your comment.

as you mentioned that "Our product group does not have active cable in our product portfolio",

we thought you mean "TI does not have active cable product",

but does TI has redriver IC solution for an active cable?

    Regards,

    Eric Li

  • Eric

All of our re-driver are for source and sink side application, we do not have a re-driver solution for the active cable.

    Thanks

  • Hi David,

    Thanks for your comment.

for transmitting 720P video by TUSB1146 at source and TUSB1064 and sink, what is the maximum expected USB type C cable length? or what is the max allowable loss, insertion loss and return loss? or we have to get the EVMs to evaluate it?

    Regards,

    Eric Li

  • Eric

The TUSB1146 can support the bandwidth associated with the 720p resolution.

Is this a custom Type-C cable? If this is the case, then the best way is to get the EVM and physically test it out.

    Thanks

    David

  • Hi David,

    Thanks for your support.

we was asking TI for EVM.

we intended to use standard USB3.2 gen 2 (10Gbps) type-c cable, up to 3 meter, first,

and will use longer custom type-c cable to do test later.

furthermore, for for transmitting 720P video by TUSB1146 at source and TUSB1064 and sink, what is the max acceptable return loss and insertion loss? we will base on this information to make the custom type-c cable.

    Regards,

    Eric Li

    A standard USB3.2 Gen 2 10G Type-C cable will only be up to 1m.

For Type-C to DP passive cable, such cables are VESA certified to the DP8K, DP40, or DP80 performance level and designating-support for DP bit rates up to HBR3, UHBR10, or UHBR20, respectively, and up to four lanes of reversible operation. Please refer to the DP2.1 spec for the max acceptable RL and IL.

For Type-C to Type-C passive cable, please refer to Universal Serial Bus Type-C (USB Type-C ® ) Cable and Connector Specification version 2.2.

    Thanks
