TIDA-01632: AoA Positioning Accuracy

To whom it may concern,

I have a customer who is currently interested in solutions for high accuracy positioning. They are looking at GNSS+RTK modules, but may not need SUCH high accuracy, and thus are looking for something closer to ~1m accuracy.

I noticed there is the TIDA-01632 which outlines using the BLE 5.1 AoA for positioning, but I am wondering what the accuracy of this is, as it does not seem to be outlined in the documentation.

Hey Matthew,

I would recommend sharing this app note where we took some measurements with different setups for the dual dipole antenna and also did some simple linear compensation to get some measurements for accuracy. This is the same antenna design used in TIDA-01632 and TIDA-020032.

Hi Donovan,

I appreciate the reply, and will share this! I just want to confirm, this method of using BLE for AoA will only measure positioning by the angle, but will functionally give no indication of distance. Am I understanding this correctly?

Hey Matthew,

That is correct. You can use RSSI or some form of time of flight for distance measurements.

Hi Donovan,

Thank you. As for RSSI vs. ToF, if they are looking for ~1m of accuracy for a device that is ~100m away, is RSSI actually viable? This is what they say they are planning on using, but from what I understand of the CC2340 datasheet, the RSSI accuracy is +-4dB, which seems considerably higher than what they would need.

Do you have a similar app note for taking ToF/RSSI accuracy measurements? The errors in both could maybe estimate an overall error. I just have worries about using RSSI due to accuracy, and ToF because this would be an application outside.
