TIDA-010057: Help required for entry level Ultrasound probe

Part Number: TIDA-010057
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1626, AFE5809, TX75E16, AFE5828, SN65LVDS349

Tool/software:

Hi,

Can anyone help me find a chip that can do basic Ultrasound? From basic I mean to say that I don't want to use any FPGA. Just a basic ultra sound transducer connected to a MCU/Processor to send the imagery over WiFi or to display it on an LCD.

  • Anyone...? Can I use AFE5809 with ADS1626 then provide its data to STM32H7 series MCU? Will the ADS1626 accept the LVDS serial out data. Can you also provide some TI part# for HV MUX and its FET driver?

  • Hi, Khan

thanks for interesting in TI solurtions. I'm sorry to response so late. I don't know what happened and I could not receive the eamil for this supporting need. I just get your supporting need from my colleague.

now back o your questions. here is some question for your project.

    1. how many transmitter channels in your design?

    2. how many receiver channels in your project?

    3. do you need TGC functions in your project?

    4. do you need CWD functions in your project?

    5. what is end application or end equipment of your project?

since ignore information of ahead said, I would like preliminary propose you use TI: TX75E16 for your ultrasonic transmitter and AFE5828 as receiver. unfortunately, AFE5828 is LVDS output. but MCU generally has no LVDS input. this means that you need a LVDS to CMOS converter in your design. even though, most MCU could not receive the data with >100M rate. all this means a simple FPGA or CPLD is needed in your system for data receiver...here is all chips associate with ultrasound imaging for selecting.

ultrasound imaging system is quite complicated for a newer designer. I prefer you ask your local FAE for get strong supporting from TI. E2E is good if you meet issues with specific chips.feel free to let us know if you need further supporting.

  • Hi,
Thanks for getting back... It can be as low as 8-channels. Actually I need to develop a POC with the minimum possible size without using any FPGA. A very basic ultrasound image would be enough for me.

  • Hi, Khan

ok. get your idea. here is my proposal.

    1. I would like propose you use TI: TX75E16 for your transmitter. MOSFET driver with MOSFET will make your system has too large size. TX75E16 has 16 channel transmitter. but you can use 8-channel to meet your application with small size.

2.you could not use ADS1626 to converter AFE5809's output to MCU. the best way is you can use a simple and low cost FPGA to interface with AFE5809 and receiver the data from AFE5809. then you use STM32H7 to do imaging.

    3. if you absolute not to use FPGA, then you have to use a LVDS receiver to converter LVDS to LVCMOS/LVTTL for STM32H7. SN65LVDS349 can be used to converter LVDS to LVCMOS and interface with STM32H7. but keep in mind, the maximum sample rate for AFE5809 will be less than 40M since the maximum data rate for SN65LVDS349 is 560Mbps.

feel free to let us know if you need further supporting. thanks.

    regards,

    Bill
