TIDA-00175: Evaluation board testing absolute single /multi turn encoder using BISS-C interface

Part Number: TIDA-00175
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CONTROLSUITE, C2000WARE

Tool/software:

Hello Team,

We have motor with single / multiturn absolute encoder  . Do you have evaluation kit where we can test our absolute encoder and check accuracy and other parameters of it.

Currently we do not have any microcontroller where we can read absolute outpu.

Regards,

Sayali

  • Hi Sayali,

Thank you for your interest in TI's solutions for encoder interfaces.

I assume you have a single/multi-turn encoder with BISS-C interface? From am MCU either Sitara or C2000 support BiSS-C host.

     Option 1: C2000 MCU

The C2000 MCU provide an EVM: https://www.ti.com/tool/BOOSTXL-POSMGR which connects to e.g. the F28379D Launchpad.

     Hardware Features
    • 2x channels of RS-485 line interface supporting up to 100m distances
    • 1x SinCos analog interface
    • 2x 20-pin headers/connectors to LaunchPad
    • Capable of supporting 2x absolute encoders simultaneously
    • Works with CLB-enabled C2000 MCUs
    • Hardware Files are in controlSUITE at development_kits\BOOSTXL_POSMGR

    Software Features

    • Free download of Position Manager solutions in C2000 controlSUITE package
      • Simple application programming interface
      • Absolute encoder support for EnDat 2.2, 2.1, BiSS-C and T-format
      • Analog sensor support for resolvers and SinCos transducers

    Recommended LaunchPad

    • LAUNCHXL-F28379D C2000 Delfino MCUs F28379D LaunchPad Development Kit
    • TI BoosterPack Checker for an interactive list of compatible BoosterPacks

    Option 2: Sitara MCU

    Hardware
The AM2x BLDC Servo Motor BoosterPack plug-in module is an add-on for the AM2x LaunchPad development kits. This BoosterPack provides up to two axes of 24V/8A BLDC driver, ADC/SDFM current feedback, industrial absolute encoder, and resolver feedback.

  • Hello Martin,

Thank you for the suggestion, option 1 suits to our requirement . Option 2 seems to be complicated.

For option 1 we have below few queries.

    1. can we able to measure accuracy of absolute encoder .

2.Can we compare two encoder accuracy and error on software.

    3. Is it possible to measure incremental encoder also.

Basically we want to use this kit for testing testing absolute and incremental encoder.

for incremental parameters required to test are phase shift, Duty cycle, jitter, mechanical error, accuracy wrt to reference encoder.

for absolute  parameters required to test mechanical error, accuracy wrt to reference encoder.

  • Hi Sayali,

Thank you for your feedback. It's great to hear that option 1 suits your requirements. To you questions:

    1. You can read the position feedback information from the selected encoder type, e.g. EnDat2.2 like angle with option

    2. Yes, to compare you'd need a second reference encoder which is coupled to the encoder you like to explore. Ideally you read in both encoders on the same F28379D LaunchPad and the calculate the error. Alternatively you can use a second F28379D LaunchPad and phase look both LaunchPads through e.g. GPIO and echange information through e.g. SPI. We don't have software examples for that, you'd need to develop based on your needs.

    3. Incremental encoders with 5V CMOS feedback signals A, B, I can be directly interfaced to the LaunchPad. Please see header J14 and J15 "Dual JV Quadrature Interfaces"

    Martin

  • Hello Martin,

    Thank you for your inputs.

For 1 point can we able to get error also and is it possible to share some snapshot of reading on GUI just for reference or any video available on library.

For 3 point when we give incremental output , what reading we can get on software , can we get phase shift, duty, jitter and error?

    Regards,

    Sayali

  • Hi Sayali,

on item 1: The software provided from the C2000 MCU, connects to absolute encoders such as EnDat2.2 and reads-out the position. As I mention in item 2, if you like to measure an angle error, you'd need to connect to a second absolute encoder as your reference encoder. Then you need to compare both angle and calculate the error yourself.

You may look at the software mentioned at https://www.ti.com/tool/BOOSTXL-POSMGR

Item 3: Same applies here. The C2000 MCU software examples like the C2000Ware: https://www.ti.com/tool/C2000WARE, provide drivers to setup the eQEP peripherals to read the incremental count from incremental encoders. Please refer to the C2000Ware examples for the eQEP periphera.

For more support on C2000 MCU and related software, I'd like to refer to our expects from the C2000 product line.

Please post your specific question on the C2000 MCU software at the C2000 MCU E2E forum: https://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/c2000-microcontrollers-group/c2000/f/c2000-microcontrollers-forum

    Thank you.

    Martin
