Tool/software:

Subject: Request for Inverter and Controller Recommendation for PMSM Motor Application.

Dear Texas Instruments Design Team,

I am writing to seek your assistance in selecting an appropriate inverter and controller solution for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) application. Below are the key motor specifications that need to be considered for the selection:

Key Motor Parameters:

Motor Type: PM Synchronous Motor

DC Bus Voltage: 48 VDC

Peak Current: 600 Arms (30 seconds)

Rated Current: 120 Arms

Peak Power: 9 kW

Rated Continuous Power: 4 kW

Rated Speed: 2500 RPM

Operating Frequency: 208.33 Hz

Number of Phases: Three Phase

Cooling Method: Natural Air Cooled

Additional Requirements:

The controller should be capable of handling field-oriented control (FOC)

Temperature sensing interface for PT1000 sensor

Protection features for overcurrent and thermal protection

Suitable for IP6X environment

Could you please recommend:

A suitable inverter solution that can handle the peak current and power requirements

A compatible motor controller/driver IC

Any evaluation or development boards that would help in prototyping

Please also let me know if you need any additional specifications to make an appropriate recommendation.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,

Likhith Sagar.

  • Hi Likhith,

Thank you for reaching out to us on the request.

Could you share to us the end equipment / application for this design? What is the targeted switching frequency? Does the motor has a rotor position sensor such as an rotary encoder or some hall sensors?

In fact, it is really a very high power design with the 600Arms or 848Apeak max current rating. For semiconductor power devices, 30 seconds are so long that we usually need to make it as the targeted design rating. Consider some margin, we may even need to make the full sense range to ±1000A peak current. We do not have a reference design capable of this rating yet.

A similar reference designs may be the TIDA-010956 (48VDC 85Arms 4kW, suitable for PMSM driving). A heatsink for the power MOSFETs is necessary and extra DC bus capacitors may also be needed. You can expand it to your targeted current rating and power rating by parallelling more MOSFETs and current sense shunts.

As for the controller, we have many MCU products suitable for it, especially for the C2000 series. For a single PMSM control, a TMS320F28003x, TMS320F28002x or TMS320F28001x are enough. We have released many related code in the C2000WARE-MOTORCONTROL-SDK.

    Best regards,

    Jerome Shan

  • Hello Jerome,

Thanks very much for getting back to me.

I am not able to attach the spec sheet here. But you can find all the details of the motor in the link below. We are planning to use this motor for low speed EV application and the motor has a rated frequency of 208.33 Hz. I believe the motor has a position sensor, I am not sure which one, I will come back to you on that.

Sorry. The rated current is just 120 amps and could we use current limiters if the inverters could not handle 30 sec 600 amps peak? Could you please suggest an apt inverter for our application or do we need to tweak the TIDA - 010956?

I appreciate your support and look forward to your reply.

    Thank you,

    Likhith Sagar.

  • Hi LIkhith,

What kind of EV is it? An automotive or an industrial vehicle?

For the power stage, another reference design may be helpful: TIDA-00364 (48-VDC 5-KW Inverter Power Stage Reference Design for Forklift AC Traction Motor).

    Best regards,

    Jerome Shan

  • Hi Jerome,

    Thank you for your reply.

We are planning to use this motor for automotive vehicle. We have two number of 48V, 2.5kWh DC batteries in parallel, running the motor via inverter setup.

I have seen this inverter but it says that this inverter is designed for AC traction motor. The motor we have is a 4 kW PMSM motor. Can you please clarify if this TIDA 00364 can be used for our PMSM application?

    Thank you,

    Likhith Sagar.

  • Hi Jerome,

I got an update with regards to position sensor.

We are planning to have hall sensors with forced air cooling for the PMSM motor.

I would appreciate it if you could help me to further drill down to arrive at a suitable inverter and controller setup.

    Thank you,

    Likhith Sagar

  • Hi Likjith,

As your design is an automotive application, I will forward this case to our antomtive team for further support.

The TIDA-00364 is for ACIM driving; and we can add 2 or 3 channels of motor phase current sensing to drive PMSM with it. However, it is a challenge to sense such a high phase current yet. Maybe you can consider to modify TIDA-01543 for it. Note, this reference design needs to use 100uΩ shunt resistor for ±300A current sense. You may even reduce it for the ±1000A target.

    Best regards,

    Jerome Shan

  • Hello Likhith,

Thank you for your questions and interest. The closest reference design that we have for automotive 48V systems is TIDM-02017 reference design: https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDM-02017 . This design is rated for 5kW and used for the control of PMSM/DC brushless type of motor. It uses TMCS320F28P65 MCU and there is also motor control software provided for it. I believe you could also use the P55 version. Besides that, it includes DRV3255-Q1, with 3.5A/4.5A peak gate drive current, TCAN1044A. I know that the power rating does not fit completely to your application, but maybe some part of it might be useful. Please let me know if you need some specific part recommendation.

    Kind regards,

    Ivana
