TIDA-060029: ADC and DAC recommendations

Part Number: TIDA-060029
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS9224REVM-PDK, ADS9224R, THS4551, THS4541, DAC1282, ADS9219

Tool/software:

Hello TI,

I’m currently working on this reference design for an LCR meter analog front end and need recommendations for selecting an ADC and DAC or DDS IC, or possibly another IC for signal generation. Could anyone recommend options that would be well-suited for this reference design?

Thank you for any suggestions!

Best regards,

Jendas

  • Hello Jendas,

The LCR reference design linked uses the ADS9224R for output measurement. Specifically, the ADS9224REVM-PDK EVM was used which has THS4551 followed by ADS9224R. This set-up made it very easy to interface with the LCR reference board. For high-speed version up to 2MHz, the ADS3662EVM was used with THS4541 followed by ADS3662.

For signal generator, a function generator, specifically the 33220A Agilent/Keysight Function Generator was used for evaluating the design. Do you need an on board waveform generator, such as from a DAC?

    Thank you,

    Sima

  • Hello SimaJalaleddine,

Thank you very much for the quick response!

Yes, I’m looking to integrate everything directly onto the PCB, so I’m interested in suitable IC options. For output measurement, the ADS3662 does seem to me a bit overkill for this application. I’m considering alternatives like dual ADS127 or ADS131?, or perhaps other similar ADCs, if you have any recommendations?

As for the signal source, a dedicated IC like a DAC or DDS would be ideal. Any suggestions on these as well?

    Thanks again!

  • Hello Jendas,

Depending on your input frequency, those two ADC options seem like good alternatives. The only issue is that I recommend at least the sampling rate to be at least twice the input frequency. If you are doing 100kHz and above, I found that I obtained good results with 500Ksps and above, maybe even 1MSPS.

I am part of the high speed amplifier team supporting >50MHz amplifiers (VFB, CFA, VGA/PGAs, FDAs) such as what was used in the reference design. I will move this thread to our precision ADC team for more suggestions. They should be able to support you on this thread.

Also, I recommend starting a new thread asking about DAC or DDS, since that will be routed to the best team to support your question. I would link this device to the new thread to be routed to the correct group: DAC1282.

    Thank you,
    Sima

  • Hi Jendas,

ADC selection will depend on the frequency range of your LCR meter. For 2-channel simultaneous sampling >1MSPS ADC, besides ADS9224R, ADS9219 could be an another option. This is a 18-bit ADC with 20MSPS/ch sample rate.

    >=1 MSPS, >=16-bit, Dual Channel ADCs
