TIDA-010040: TIDA-010040:

Part Number: TIDA-010040
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA2011D1, TPA3110D2

Tool/software:

I am working with the TIDA-010040 reference design (Alarm Tone Generator) and, after some software tweaks, this is working.

However, I need to increase the output volume by at least three times and so, for test purposes, I tried a MAX9759 and was surprised to see a decrease in achievable volume.

On further investigation it appears that the TIDA-010040 design is achieving maximum output from the TPA2005 with only a 1V peak to peak differential audio input waveform, offset from 0V by approx 1.5V.

Further experiments with the MAX9759 show that it requires at least a 5V (and ideally 6V) peak to peak differential input waveform to achieve maximum volume

Can you recommend a TI Class D amplifier IC which will work with the TIDA-010040 reference design and produce at least 4 Watts into 4 or 8 Ohms, ideally in a package suitable for R&D purposes (TSSOP, QFN or similar).

I would rather not have to abandon this project / opportunity just because of insufficient output volume.

Thank you.

  • Hi Ralph,

One part to consider would be the TPA2011D1. This device can provide 3.2W into 4 ohm. Are you limited to a 5V input supply to the audio amplifier? If not, a device such as the TPA3110D2 could offer significantly higher power output.

For your reference, we also have a couple other medical alarm designs:

  • Thanks Christian for the prompt reply.

12V also available so will look at the TPA3110D2. I hope that it doesn't suffer the same fate as the MAX9759 (which produced virtually no output (set to max gain) with the 1V pkpk signal that the TIDA-010040 design produces).

I spent some time with the TIDA-010040 design, so will stick with that for the time being.

    Regards
