TPS50601A-SP: Inductor current instability

Part Number: TPS50601A-SP

Tool/software:

Considering the following conditions (please, view the schematic image attached), it can be observed an instability in the inductor's current at around 5-5.5 ms. It occurs only at this time after simulating for 10 ms. Please can you advise  us if it is an instability we need to mitigate (or if we need to modify something in our design), or if this is an expected behaviour during the simulation?

  • Hello Daniel,

The perturbations in inductor current after soft startup is complete are expected behavior.

Your simulation however appears to oscillate several times before damping out. I recommend using a smaller inductor to increase current ripple, that should help dampen the  behavior.

It looks like the calculation used for the inductance was 10% current ripple at the desired 1A output current. When calculating the inductor value for small currents, the target current ripple should generally be increased. For the simulation screenshot above, 40% ripple at 1A output current was targeted.

    Thanks,

    Andy
