TIDA-010232: Isolation requirements

Part Number: TIDA-010232
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AMC3330

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am developing a high voltage BMS which will have isolation resistance measurement, high voltage measurement, current measurement and etc. Is it necessary to use isolation amplifiers and relays. What is the benefit of maintaining isolation between a high voltage system and a low voltage system. Are there any standards that would require this function (IEC62477 for example). A battery with BMS would be used with solar panels and inverters.

thank you!

  • Hello Svetika,

there is no hard requirement that those systems need to be isolated in general. It depends on the system; in an EV-Charger for example it needs to be isolated since the car battery is on a different potential before charging starts and isolation to PE needs to be checked. I cannot speak in general if a BMS system needs and isolated insulation monitoring. The solution we put together is isolated. The AMC3330 can be replace by a non-isolated amp if no isolation can be accepted, but this is up to the system designer.

    hope that helps

    best regards
