PMP23377: PMP23377: Scaling to 5 kW for Bidirectional for Charging discharging

Part Number: PMP23377
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM51770, UCD3138

Tool/software:

Hi TI Team,

I have following questions related to this reference design guide.

  • Can PMP23377 be adapted to operate as a true 4-switch bidirectional converter (e.g., with firmware updates or minor hardware changes), or is it intended as a unidirectional design?

  • If we need bidirectional capability:

    • Can LM51770 or a similar controller be adapted to manage both charge and discharge using phase current control?

    • If not, do you recommend UCD3138 instead for better state-machine-level bidirectional management?

  • Since PMP23377 operates at 1.4 kW per phase, would 3–4 interleaved phases be acceptable to reach 5 kW in discharge mode? What thermal considerations should we plan for in this power density?

  • Is there any public firmware or codebase available for PMP23377 or LM51770 showing power stage control, phase sync, or telemetry logic?

  • Lastly, any PCB layout recommendations or documents for high-current bidirectional routing (100 A+ continuous) in this topology would be appreciated.

Your Help in very valuable. Looking forward to hear from you.

  • Hi,

Reply as below highlight in red...

    • Can PMP23377 be adapted to operate as a true 4-switch bidirectional converter (e.g., with firmware updates or minor hardware changes), or is it intended as a unidirectional design?

---PMP23377 is now for unidirectional but it could be bi-directional by hardware change because LM51770 is a true bidirectional 4SWs controller.
    • If we need bidirectional capability:

      • Can LM51770 or a similar controller be adapted to manage both charge and discharge using phase current control?

---I'm not sure if the "phase current" meaning as directional or interleaving?
      • If not, do you recommend UCD3138 instead for better state-machine-level bidirectional management?

        ---Same as previous one.
    • Since PMP23377 operates at 1.4 kW per phase, would 3–4 interleaved phases be acceptable to reach 5 kW in discharge mode? What thermal considerations should we plan for in this power density?

---Yes, you can in parallel them by 4 interleaving phases to reach 5KW in discharge mode through external phase shift PWM signal by MCU(Like UCD3138, C2000...) to SYNC pin of LM51770.
    • Is there any public firmware or codebase available for PMP23377 or LM51770 showing power stage control, phase sync, or telemetry logic?

---LM51770 is a analog part, not sure it can do it...
    • Lastly, any PCB layout recommendations or documents for high-current bidirectional routing (100 A+ continuous) in this topology would be appreciated.

---Let me check where you can find it.

    Regards,

    Richard
