TIDA-010042: Why we chose BUCK topology in MPPT

Part Number: TIDA-010042

Tool/software:

Hi expert,

Why we chose BUCK topology in MPPT reference design TIDA-010042 and don't choose BUCK-BOOST? What's the advantage of BUCK and how to avoid when PV panel voltage less than battery voltage?

Best Regards,

Ryker

  • Hi Ryker,

Thanks for asking this. TIDA-010042 is originally designed to charge batteries when PV panel voltage is higher than battery voltage.

The advantage of BUCK is cheap and easier to control. When the PV panel voltage is less than battery voltage, basically this converter will stop working. So, if in your application, the PV panel voltage will be lower than battery voltage, you need to use the buck-boost topology. It will enable you to have a wider range of operating area.

    Best Regards,
