Can the output current of the PMP21529 4-switch buck-boost bi-directional DC-DC converter be controlled via I²C or SPI using an MCU, in both directions?

The existing code in PMP21529 does not support this feature, however, you can add this feature by developing your own code.
Do you mean that the UCD3138 controller IC (which includes a fully programmable 31.25 MHz, 32-bit ARM7TDMI-S processor) can communicate with an external MCU via I2C or UART, and can also be configured to set current limits while operating the unit?
