PMP41115: How to deal with Arc when pulling out the device

Part Number: PMP41115
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS26750, TPD4S480

Tool/software:

Hi expert,

I leveraged this solution and try to win more TI sockets to my customer. And customer hopes to know how we to deal with the arc caused by high voltage when pulling out the Type C device.

here is the picture customer shared with me to explain the issue.

Key translation:

When a cable is unplugged during operation.

  • The source side's Vbus remains powered, and due to the sudden loss of load, the regulated power supply adjusts, causing the Vp voltage to rise. This voltage remains elevated for a while before shutting down.
  • The sudden drop in current in the line causes inductive kickback, causing the Vp voltage to rise.
  • The sudden loss of source power on the sink side causes the local capacitor to discharge rapidly, causing the VR voltage to drop.

These three factors create a voltage difference: VP - VR.

Two conditions for arc generation:

  • The voltage difference between the two electrodes is greater than 12V
  • The gap between the two electrodes is less than 7.5µm - 10µm

If TPD4S480 take the function or the TPS26750 take the function, I don’t have too much time to deepdive these two datasheet, please kindly help me to understand it.
