ADS8588SEVM-PDK: sbau278b Eval Ref inquiry

I am reviewing the document “sbau278b” which is an eval board for ADS8588S. Under section 2.1, for an external reference voltage the following diagram is present. I notice it has a 100-ohm resistance in series with the J5 to the REF pin.

I am looking for clarification on if this resistance is being utilized for filtering or protecting a surge across jumper J5 when connected? I see no mention of a series resistance like that in either the REF5025 or ADS8588S’s datasheets.
