LM5156: IC selection

Part Number: LM5156

Hi TI Team,

I am developing DC to DC Converter of 30W for defense application.

Input : 16 to 50V DC

Output : 28V DC

Power : 30W

Isolation : 500V DC

Application : Military Defence

Topology : Flyback

I had used Power designer tool but there is no simulation available for my requirements. So please provide guidance for the selection of suitable IC

  • Hello Balaji,

Thanks for using the e2e forum.
We have the Power Stage Designer tool, which is great for initial calculations of the voltage and power levels, but it does not give device recommendations.
For device recommendations, we have the Webench tool instead.
I am not sure which tool you have used so far.

For the given specs, the LM5156 would be the best suitable device.
This device also comes with a quickstart calculator tool for device specific calculations:
    https://www.ti.com/tool/download/SNVC240

This device can be simulated in webench, or you can use the available PSpice modeling files, which can be found here:
    https://www.ti.com/lit/zip/snvmbv9

As this is a military application falling under ITAR regulations, my support capabilities are limited in regards of design help and reviews, so providing you with links to the openly available tools is all I can do for now.
Thanks a lot for your understanding.

    Best regards,
    Niklas

  • Thanks Niklas. I'll refer the sources you provided. One more query, Is there any kind of eval boards for evaluating the same flyback behaviour with the same rating? If Yes, Can you provide me those links

  • Hi Balaji,

    Thanks for the feedback.
We have a LM5156 flyback EVM board available:
    https://www.ti.com/tool/LM5156HEVM-FLY

It is designed for 5V, 4A output, so to use it for a 28V output, the diode and capacitors on the output side might need be to replaced with higher voltage rating parts.
BOM and schematic files are given within the EVM User's guide.

    Best regards,
    Niklas

  • Addition to that, Transformer also needs to be changed as I predict. But there is no simulation model available right now. Can you suggest any evaluation boards that  can have input voltage range of 16to50V DC and capable of producing 28V output and driving greater than 1A. Thanks for providing support

  • Hello Balaji,

We do have reference designs who match these conditions.
For example, this is a flyback design 18V-30V input, 28V output, 70W
    https://www.ti.com/tool/PMP22151

Unfortunately, these designs are not available sampling or ordering.

    Best regards,
    Niklas
