LM63615-Q1: Power Dissipation calculation

Part Number: LM63615-Q1

Hi TI Team,

I am working on heatsink design for Buck converters and would like to confirm the correct method/formula for calculating the IC power dissipation (PD).

Should the IC power dissipation be calculated using:

PD = PIN - POUT      or

PD = POUT * ((1 / n) - 1)

Also, does this calculation already include the internal MOSFET conduction and switching losses, or are there any additional internal losses that should be added separately for accurate junction temperature estimation?

Thanks.

  • Hi Amirthathaaran,

    You can find the Power losses by checking the efficiency curve.If you need a condition that's not in the DS you can try webbench.

    You can estimate the L losses = I^2 R (R = Inductor DCR). Some vendors like Coilcraft also let you estimate the AC Core losses as well.

    However, I think this IC should be fine to use the thermal pad. on the PCB and using the ground plane as a heat sink.

    Thanks,
    Andrew
