Version 3.4 can't recreate designs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40210

Hi All,

I have been using the online version of Switcher Pro for a TPS40210 and created designs with the following inputs

Vin min = 11

Vin max = 14

Vout = 50V

Iout = 2A

In the past this design was created with no problems but there was a warning that the current through the output cap exceeded the recomended value.  I was then able to go to the output cap and select a different cap and by following the recomended number of caps and any warnings, the design would be created without any warnings.

In version 3.4, I am unable to get to even a design with warnings.

Should I take this to mean that some major problem was found that invalidates the design I was working on from the previous version of Switcher Pro?

If I open up the design done in the previous version of switcher pro, version 3.4 does pick up on the incorrect spec for the CSD1623Q3 which had a Vds of 60V previously but is actually 25V.  However the other parts of the design don't raise any issues.

I know that you aren't aiming to create a fool proof design suite that will replace the power supply designer but I am pretty new to power supply design so I am looking to the tool to guide my design process.

Please let me know if there is more info I can provide to help understand the question.

Finally, just want to say that the Switcher Pro is a FANTASTIC tool and it certainly help heaps of people with their designs AND sell TI hardware at the same time.

cheers

Peter

  • Hi All,

really need some feedback on this problem.  Is it me going for something insane or is there an issue that's being looked at.  Please let me know.

  • Hi All,

I tried to get Version 3.4 to create the TPS40210 EVM.  This is a 24V, 2A output from a 12 input.  Version 3.4 throws up a whole lot of reasons why this can't be done.  Perhaps something got broken in this version.

    cheers

  • Wow this thread is so hot, look at all these responses!![:)]

Is it just me or are half the EVM designs marked with exclamation marks now.

    I am using firefox 3.5.5

Tried it again using IE 8 with and without compatability mode.

Am I alone on this problem.  Can anyone else confirm or debunk what I am seeing?

    cheers

    Peter

  • Hello Peter,

  • Hi Hetal,

Thanks for your response.  I have sent 2 designs to the mails you indicated.  One is for a 36V, 2.5A output from a 11-14V supply and the 2nd is a 50V, 2A from the same supply.

Both designs were created with only warnings about the RMS current rating of the output caps (pretty sure this is the case).  Changing the output cap made everything ok.

Please let me know if you need any further info.

    cheers

    Peter

PS: The attached screenshot shows on the left how the EVM designs look even though they have not been moodified or created by me.

  • Hello Peter,

We understand that there are many EVM designs which have errors. It did not happen in the last version v3.4, but in past few versions. Some EVMs are created with on-the-edge inputs and thus, may have warnings. We are looking into these EVM designs, too and will update you when we find the resolution.

    Thanks,

    Hetal.

  • Hello Peter,

We have fixed the issues with TPS40210 devices. Both your inputs (11-14 Vin, 36 Vout, 2 Iout and 11-14 Vin, 50 Vout, 2 Iout) work and SwitcherPro creates designs without any errors.

Thank you for reporting this and helping us improve the quality of our software.
