Will SwitcherPro model inductor saturation effects accurately?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61030

I am working with a customer who's DC/DC regulator is demonstrating some unusual input current characteristics at low temperature.  One hyposthesis is that the inductor is saturating.  To explore this theory, I would like to simulate an inappropriate inductor to evaluate the performance effects.  Is switcherpro a good platform for this type of what if?

The part I am interested in is the TPS61030. Although its currently not supported on switcherpro, I still would like to evaluate inductor choices on similar devices.

thanks for any advice

  • Steve,

    Great Question.

SwitcherPro uses the pure inductor value you input for all the calculations.  It won't properly derate the inductor when it gets close to saturation.  I don't think it's a good platform for this kind of what if case.

If you know what the derated value will be (from a curve you may have) you could put that value in the what if form to see effects to loop response.
