Operating temperature range

When using Webench to design a circuit, it only allows you to specify the ambient temperature.  But what is the operating temperature range of the final design.  I can see the expected component temperatures based on current at that ambient temperature.  However, we need a fairly wide operating range (-40 to +85 C).

How do I verify that the circuit parameters operate over a given temperature range?

  • Richard,
Thanks for the question. At this point, you will have to manually verify that the design works for higher/lower ambient temperature. Design will usually work for lower temperatures, that is typically less of a concern. At higher tempertures, power dissipation does increase, but to first order it is can be considered independent of it. So as an initial estimate you can operate the design at temperature higher than ambient by an amount by which the IC junction temperature spec exceeds the operating IC Junction temperature.
