WEBENCH - phase margin value of LMZ31530

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMZ31530

I checked LMZ31530 webench simulation.
The phase margin value is listed in operating value page in initial condition. However it is deleted when I edit circuit component.
Is it possible to check phase margin value in any condition? If it is impossible currently, can you fix this phenomenon?

  • Kohei,

I need to understand what you were trying to do before I can say if there is a solution for the problem. If you were simply changing a value of a component, the circuit calculator would recalculate the phase margin once the change in the component was made. This the way the WEBENCH® has worked for quite some time.

If you used the Edit icon:

You were prompted to save the edited copy under a new version and you can then edit the topology of the circuit. This will eliminate the connection between this design and the circuit calculators because the calculators will not know what changes you have made to the circuit and how this would effect the overall operating point. You should not use this to edit component values, only to add circuitry to the design that was created by WEBENCH®.

If you only need to edit a value or type of component, simple select the BOM and click on the green box next to the component you wish to change. Once you have finished with the update, the circuit will recalculate the OpVals based on the change made.

I hope that this information answers your question. You can change component values in the Edited copy as well, but you will lose the connection to the circuit calculators and will only be able to run SPICE simulations on the circuit to see the performance of the circuit. You are not currently able to simulate the Phase Margin of the device after you have entered the Schematic Editor.

  • Britt-san,

    Thank you for your response.
I'm using BOM page or Schematic page to edit component. Did you try LMZ31530 WEBENCH design?
The phase margin value was removed from Op vals list after editing component.

  • Kohei-san,

You are correct. We have found a problem with the calculator and corrected it. I have tested a simple example and the OpVals are updated when changing a component now.

Sorry for the confusion. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

  • Britt-san,

I checked WEBENCH with LMZ31530. However the phase margin value is never listed on OpVals page.
In the previous version, the phase margin value was listed at initial condition, however it is not listed even at initial condition in current version.
Can you confirm phase margin value?

  • Britt-san,

Sorry for pushing you. Could you please reply to my last post?

  • Kohei-san,

I had asked one of my colleagues to answer your query, but they did not post a reply. Sorry for the delay and inconvenience. The Phase Margin and Crossover Frequency were removed from the OpVals table because this device is DCAP device.

In this case, the datasheet details the kind and value of capacitors that can be used with the device. Since there is more than one loop in the device, the calculations that were being done would not properly address the actual phase margin of the device, so they have been removed. There was a posting on Power Tips about the proper way to measure a Bode Plot for a DCAP device. It can be seen here:

    https://e2e.ti.com/blogs_/b/powerhouse/archive/2015/05/05/power-tips-how-to-measure-bode-plots-with-dcap-and-dcapx-regulators?keyMatch=dcap bode plot&tisearch=Search-EN-Everything

I hope that this information helps. Sorry for the delay.
