TIDA-00120(Mppt Charge controller) compatibility?

Hello all,

I was wondering if it is possible to use this charge controller with a 31.45V,7.98A 250Watt panel for a 12 volt battery system?

I read the test report and saw that a voltage of 30VDC was being used for a 24 volt system. But would it be safe and compatible with a 12 volt system?

Also as far as the the charge controller goes, will it be able to determine how much life a battery has left?

Hello Britt,

Fact that some development board contains microcontroller does not make question "I was wondering if it is possible to use this charge controller with a 31.45V,7.98A 250Watt panel for a 12 volt battery system?" related to microcontroller. IMHO it is still about SM72295 Photovoltaic Full Bridge Driver capabilities!

Hi Reger,

The 24V rating for TIDA-00120 is based on the 12-24V MPPT charge controller system. The FETs are rated for 40V on TIDA-00120 because that how much input voltage can reach with 24V system. For 30V system the input voltage can go up to 60V. Therefore you need to scale the MOSFETs to handle a higher voltage. The only voltage limitation is with the FETs. The SM72295 can handle up to 115V. So if you want to run higher votlage, make sure you change the FETs to handle higher voltage.

I´m also trying to use this project with 250W solar panel, actualy, I have 2 of this panels, so i wonder to handle 40Amps.

Should i change any other component further the MOSFET? (I have selected D2PAK MOSFET(TO-263).

what about Inductors and Capacitors?

Carlos,

As long as your MOSFET RSDON is such that the heat dissipation doesn't exceed the maximum junction temp of the FETs, you should be ok. Consider using heat sink if RDSON is higher. Also in most TI Designs the BOM is selected the keep the cost lower. Please check the other component rating (which includes inductors and capacitors) and replace them to accommodate 30V solar system.
