TPS55340: Trouble Simulating on Webench

Hi team,

We are looking at the TPS55340 and TPS61175 as potential candidates to provide a 12V, 3A rail with 11.2-17.4V input.

When trying to do the Webench simulation with either device, I am receiving the error: "Design cannot be created with this device. Please press OK and select a different device from the list"

Can I not get this rail with that input voltage range?

At least for TPS55340, Webench only supports boost topology. Not sure about TPS61175.

Hi John,

Thanks for the quick response. Good to know that the Webench model can only support boost topology. Do you know if the part would be able to provide that voltage rail though?

Hi Akash,

You may be able to use the TPS55340 as a SEPIC to support this application. Below is a link to the SEPIC EVM. On this page there is also some additional documentation on how to use the part this way. However with some quick math I believe it will likely fall slightly short of the 3 A requirement and it will be closer to 2 A with the minimum input voltage. If 3 A is an absolute must, I believe a controller with external FET is needed.

Both TPS55340 and TPS61175 are implemented as Boost topologies in WEBENCH while your conditions (12V, 3A rail with 11.2-17.4V input) call for SEPIC or Buck-Boost topology. You can input your conditions in WEBENCH search for a suitable device. Alternatively, you can use Anthony's idea of making a SEPIC design from these parts.

Thanks Surinder and Anthony for the suggestions. Looks like the TPS55340 will not work to provide the 3A we want. Anthony F, do you know if the TPS61175 would fall short as well?

Also, we should probably indicate somewhere on the page that Webench will only provide suggestions for this part as a boost even though they can both be implemented as SEPICs.

The TPS61175 will only support even lower than the TPS55340. It has a lower peak current limit than the TPS55340. With a quick calculation, a boost with a peak current of around 8 A is needed for 3 A.
