TINA/Spice/PMP7338: Determine compensation network values using LM5022 TINA-TI Average model - OK to use with SEPIC?

Part Number: PMP7338

Tool/software: TINA-TI or Spice Models

Can anyone describe how the compensation network values are obtained for the PMP7338 reference design?

This uses the LM5022 in a SEPIC topology centred around 12 V, however I wish to scale it to operate at:

- 24 V in,

- 21-29 V out,

- 3 A output current (into a variable voltage load).

I have started with the LM5022 Transient TINA schematic, and replaced the boost inductor with a SEPIC inductor model (from a schematic in a posting about TPS55340 SEPIC).

I transferred those schematic values to the LM5022 Average schematic, and obtained what seems to be a stable result.

Whilst this appears to simulate OK, I am doubtful whether the "Average" TINA model can sufficiently model the SEPIC topology, when it does not require the topology to be drawn around it (it takes only input and output voltages, with efficiency and other parameters entered into the model).

  • The small signal model for a SEPIC is very complicated.  For a simple first order approximation what I do is model the output filter as a simple RC, with C = Cout and R = Rload.  This gives a first order system with a single pole.  This is how the compensation was designed.  Since it is current mode control, the coupled inductor value does not matter.

    Thanks,
