WEBENCH® Tools/TPS40170: Webench cannot find a suitable FET

Part Number: TPS40170

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

My customer needs to design short pulse high current about 20 A at 7.4 v output.vin equal to 52v.

Webench cannot create a design because it cannot find a suitable FET.  Can you fix this?

  • Hi John,

The TPS40170 configuration in WEBENCH Power Designer uses single FETs, and as such is not suitable for delivering the high power described by your requirements.   This type of design is best addressed with a dual-FET output stage, and will need some optimization for best efficiency and load response (considering this is a pulsed load situation).

I would recommend starting with a TIDesign that is similar to the requirements, such as http://www.ti.com/tool/PMP6680 .  It is set up for Vin=43-53V, Vout=12V at 20A. It uses parallel FETs and a lot of Cout & Cin.  With just a tweak on the feedback resistors, this could probably do the job.
