TIDA-00120: Do I need an external Heat Sink?

Part Number: TIDA-00120

Hello,

I recently made a PCB from the TIDA-00120 schematic and I was wondering if I need an external heat sink for this charge controller. I will connect an 100 watt 18 volt solar panel to a 12 volt battery which will supply 5.5 amps of current to the load. Thanks.

  • Adam,

If you used the same layout as the TIDA design, and are operating within the constraints of the design, then there would be no reason to add a heatsink.  And are you asking to add the heatsink to a specific component, or for the entire board?

I have asked the TIDA-00120 designer to comment on this, look for his reply here.

  • Leonard,

You are right. The original design did not use any heatsink. However, it is important to maintain the layout and use 2 oz. Copper for board fabrication. The board was tested up to 20A with a 12V battery.
