WEBENCH® Tools/TPS61170: device cannot be used, then the -Q1 version can be used

Part Number: TPS61170

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

Hello Webench team.

I am trying to run a design from Webench in the TPS61170 product folder.
Vin 5V, Vout 36V 5mA.

Webench opens.
Says Design cannot be created with this device.

However if I click OK on the box that pops up and then click RECALCULATE, without changing the parameters, a list of usable devices is shown.
One of them is TPS61170-Q1, which is the same device as TPS61170 but auto qualified.
I can click on the Q1 part and get a full design.

If the design will work with the Q1 it should work with the standard part, I believe.

  • Ed,

The TPS61170/-Q1 loop and efficiency models may not work properly for very light load like the value you are specifying as the DCM operation is not modeled for these devices. The design for the TPS61170-Q1 could, however, be used instead of the TPS61170 like you said except for the Rcomp and Ccomp values (as they are designed as if the device worked in CCM while in reality it is in DCM) I will look into the issue on why the design cannot get created on the TPS61170 in the meanwhile. More than likely it is related to an issue with the loop compensation. I will also keep a note on how we could eventually fix the loop models to include both CCM/DCM operation and that also helps with compensation design. Thanks for this message!

    Regards,
