PMP4486: Can it be used for a solar charger?

I would like to use Gan mosfets for building a synchronous buck converter with mppt between a solar panel of 47V at MP and a 12V battery.The power is max 30W.

To accelerate the prototyping, the following reference designs are interesting :

PMP4486

LM5113LLPEVB/NOPB

TIDA-01634

The PMP4486 seems to be more flexible in order to integer the MPPT algorithm compared to the LM5113 evaluation board.

Do you think it can suit the application? and can it be ordered already assembled?

    Thank you for your question. I believe GaN is overkill for a 30W application. Take a look at the attached design. You can achieve MPPT based on Input Voltage Regulation to 47V MP. Instead of limiting the input current to 300mA with U2A, you can instead limit the input voltage to the point of your choosing. A good device to use for your application is LM76003. It is capable of starting up into pre-biased conditions, so the power supply will not try to sync current from the battery.

    I would prefer to not use an integrated circuit with every thing in it because this project is a way to learn.

    The idea is to "assemble" passive elements, transistors, drivers,supplies, control unit, sensors.The control unit could be programmed

    in order to compare different control strategies.The final integration will certainly  not reach the efficiency and the small size of a

    commercial integrated circuit like the LM76003.Are there reference designs of buck converters with the starting-up into pre biaised conditions, the adjustable soft-start
    without integrated circuit including transistors+drivers/sensors/control unit for MPPT?

    The use of integrated circuit for transistors and drivers remains however interesting in this application to reduce problems of connections between transistors and drivers.

    For most flexibility, C2000 would be a good digital controller to investigate. There is a lot of information and a HV development kit at this website. www.ti.com/.../TIDM-SOLAR-DCDC

    There is also a very nice tutorial for using C2000 in a MPPT synchronous buck converter, however, this tutorial is not owned by TI. coder-tronics.com/.../
