TIDA-00951: Cold-start for capacitive load

Part Number: TIDA-00951

HELLO,TI teams:

For the previous discussion of cold start posts in Jan 27, 2018(reply time),    I think low side inductor current decrease condition is (N*Vout – Vin)>0  when bidirectional converter works。

When Vout<Vin/N  ,need an additional boost converter for start-up。

But in practical application,400V Bus Often there are high capacity capacitance,for example,8000uF。  Boost converter need a few seconds for start up,and longer time for Vin=60V。

What‘s worse, when Bus voltage up to 150V,Some equipment on Bus start to work and pull down Bus voltage

       Need solutions.

  • In such case (load start at 150V Bus voltage), you can try using the startup clamp in addition to the current fed converter working in normal mode.  If you control the current rampup correctlly, it should be okay to workin Vout<Vin/N condition with reduced efficiency for a short period of few seconds.
