Lion Battery Over Charge protection and charging indication circuit

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ7716, BQ2947, BQ40Z50

We are developing Battery pack using 11.1v , 5.2 Amp Lion battery.  For charging this battery we are using CC CV charger of 13V. For Safety we are using good quality BMS circuit but we want to use one more protection circuit with charging and full charge indication with auto cutoff o/p.

Want a design for the circuit for following requirement: We want to use this circuit in between CC CV charger and Battery for protection of Over Charge, Our BMS will also cut off after full charge but we want extra circuit which will cut of the output after full charge of battery as well as while charging of the battery there should be seprate indication (LED blinkig) and after full Charge there should be seprate indication of full charge as well as there should be short circuit protection and over voltage and over current protection (In case another charger is used to charge the battery instead of CC CV 13V).

  • Hi Yogesh,
The bq2947 series or bq7716 series would be an over voltage protector per cell, it would need to be interfaced to the switch you wish to use.
For charge current protection, normally the BMS could provide this. A MCU might take other action through the gauge or independently with a separate current measurement it might take from a current sense amp (INA). If you are considering other BMS implementations the bq40z50 will support 3 cells with a variety of features, it is commonly used with a secondary over voltage protector.
