TIDA-01512: Difference between the TDC and maximum current.

Hi TI team,

Can you please let me know what is the difference between the thermal design current and maximum current used in the reference design?

As per NXP datasheet of LS2088A the maximum current that the LS2088A can draw from the core voltage rail is 61A. But the reference design has took a maximum current of 120A. So can you please let me know whether I can design for the 61A so that the inductor will be changed to 300nH (PA2607.301NLT- Inductor, Ferrite, 300 nH, 32 A, 0.00031 ohm, SMD) and the same inductor will be used for the core and DDR phases.

Please let me know any specific reason is there behind choosing 120A as maximum current, I hope the design has been done by considering the 60A load transient. Please let me know if any other reason is there.

    The thermal design current is DC current lasting for long time.
    The maximum current is the current lasting for short time.

    Transient data for TIDA-01512 can be seen on page 10 of the design report. You can switch to a 300nH inductor for the core rail of your design but it will cause larger overshoot during the 60A transients than the 150nH choke. If you go that route please fully analyze/validate your design and be prepared to potentially add more output capacitance to accommodate the larger swing on VOUT.
