TIDA-010042: TIDA-010042

Part Number: TIDA-010042
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC39002

Hi All,

Using MSP430F5132 I want to extend following design from TI for

TI Designs: TIDA-010042
MPPT charge controller reference design for 12- and 24-V
solar panels

Requirement:

1) Battery can be charged both from Solar Panel and SMPS (AC to DC) (12V-13.5V, 7A-10A) (maximizing the use of solar panel).

2) Microcontroller or other method should make decision when to do charging from Solar panel or SMPS or both (maximizing the use of solar panel).

3) Load should be supplied from Solar Panel and Battery if power sufficiently available  otherwise remaining power to the load should be supplied from SMPS (maximizing the use of solar panel).

3) User is not aware how charging is done or load power is shared but when solar energy is available it should be used (maximizing the use of solar panel).

Please suggest detailed design along with schematic and source code.

Thanks and Regards,

Mithilesh Kumar

  • Mithilesh,
    Thanks for reaching out.
So essentially you wish to add a parallel SMPS to both charge the battery, as well as supplement the load when necessary?
Let me reach out to some of our power experts to see what the best way to do this would be and get back to you.

  • Mithilesh,
After digging deeper, what you are looking to accomplish is actually relatively complex.

The easiest solution I can think of would be to make a state machine with the mirco-controller that controls or-ing/hotswaps for power path management.

TI also makes a load share controller that might help, UCC39002. My hesitation with using this device is that the TIDA-010042 does not have the sense path that the 39002 requires, so that would have to be added to the design as well at the SMPS.

If you can solve that maybe you use the 39002 on the output of TIDA-010042 and one on the output of the SMPS, use that to charge the battery. Then you can put the load in parallel with the battery.

There are many different states and conditions though, there is not a simple solution.

Could you you outline all the different power states that you think the system could be in? That might help narrow down possible solutions.

    Bart
  • Respected Sir,

Thanks for your reply. Soon I will send the outline of all the different power states that the system could be in.

  • Respected Sir,

Solar Panel Upper voltage Limit = 25 V

Typical battery threshold values for 12 V battery
    CC_To_CV Limit = 14.2 V
    Float Voltage = 13.8 V
    Battery Cutoff = 10.2 V
    Battery Reconnect = 11.2 V
    Maximum Charging Current = 10.0 A
    Minimum Charging Current = 0 A
    Load Current Limit = 10 A

    SMPS (12 V)
    Range 13.5 V - 11.2 V
    Load Current Limit = 7.0 A

  • Mithilesh,

Thanks for sending over the specifications you have in mind.

However, what I was thinking was more of a block diagram approach, with the different states marked out in it. It seems like depending on different conditions the power could be flowing through various paths in the system, and I don't think I have a full grasp of that based on your earlier description.

  • Respected Sir,

I will send details in block diagram soon.

  • Mithilesh,

Based on your specifications and load flow, I think there is really only one good method that will be able to handle everything. The main issue is the activity controlled load sharing/balancing. While the UCC39002 can perform load sharing between power supplies, it mainly targeted to balance loads, not dynamically change the load based on available power in the system.

You can use a single C2000 DSP to operate all of the power stages. This is a significant step up from the MSP430 used on TIDA-010042, however it will let you more easily balance the output of each supply in both CC and CV modes, as a single processor is handling the operation. Please take a look at the following resources for more information regarding digital power using the C2000:
