PMP21479: Peak load spec

Part Number: PMP21479
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28780,

If we don't need PD solution, only a simple 65W 19V output adaptor, can it handle 200% peak load for 2mS?

  • Hi Hsu,

We would need to make sure that the transformer core does not saturate as 2ms is a long time. In addition we would need to review the current limit setting. I am looping in the designer for this board. He will advise.

    Thanks,
    Ryan

  • Is there any update, can this reference design comply with the DOE VI specification(no load loss<0.5W)?
  • Hi Hsu,

The UCC28780 controller allows transient over power conditions up to 115ms, so yes, you can support this application with a design very similar to PMP21479.

The PD controller on the output of PMP21479 will limit the output current to just over 3A, but with a fixed 20V output, you would remove the PD controller.  This design has not been tested for these conditions, so I do not know what oher side-effects might happen.  Saturation of the core during the peak power event would be one concern.

    thanks,

    Brian
