TINA/Spice/LM5021: Flyback

Part Number: LM5021
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TINA-TI, , UCC28630, UCC28742, UCC28740

Tool/software: TINA-TI or Spice Models

Dear Ti Team,

Could i use fly-back topology for 165W(28V/5.5A) AC to DC power supply for medical device application.

Suggest the suitable design for the above power output.

we are planning PWM controller as LM5021 or UCC3842.

Thanks & Regards

  • Hi Ganesamurthy,

Thanks for reaching out. 165W is a bit on the higher end of output power capability for flyback. At this power level, a CCM flyback would likely be necessary. We do have a reference design that is close to your design spec. Take a look at TIDA-00367. This is a 150W CCM flyback using UCC28630.

  • Hi Ben Lough,

Thanks for your support, Can we use this same  TIDA-00367 design for 28V/5.5A as battery charger and is it possible secondary side regulation.

    kindly give as suggestion

    Thanks & Regards

  • Hi Ganesamurthy,

For battery charger, a CC-CV charging profile is often needed. This typically requires two control loops on the secondary side. I would suggest not to use TIDA-00367 if your application is a battery charger. UCC28740 or UCC28742 would be suitable to use in place of UCC28630. I don't have a reference design close to your design spec using one of these controllers however.

    Best Regards,
