TIDA-010042: TIDA-010042: Wind Turbine Application - MPPT charge controller reference design for 12- and 24-V Wind Turbines

Part Number: TIDA-010042

Hello,

Could the nice TIDA-010042 be tailored to perform as MPPT Wind Turbine Charger?

In wind turbines must be used a diversion style regulator: which charges the batteries, and as the batteries become charged, the excess power is diverted to a resistive load.

Wind turbines are not designed to work with PWM or shunt style solar panels chargers controllers wired between the wind turbines and the battery bank

These controllers “disconnect” the solar panels rom the battery bank when the batteries are charged, allowing te wind turbine to spin free, which is not recommended.

Thanks,

  • Hi,

When the battery can absorb full power from the turbine, it may be possible. Also, TIDA-010042 has provision for connecting a load parallel to the battery. This can be used to dump the power when the battery is fully charged.

  • Great news !!

    Thanks so much Salil.

I'd much appreciate if you could please explain it further and how to do it and where to find technical info in TI?

So are MPPT algoritms the same for solar panels than for wind turbines charging?

    Cheers,

    Iñigo

  • Hi Inigo,

TI has not done much work on this. This design was done only for solar, and was never tested with wind generators. I think the same perturb & observe algorithm should work, as a variable duty cycle will appear as a variable break force on the generator, and the loop should settle at a point where electrical output is maximum. However, I think the control loop has to be slower, as the wind generator will need more averaging over time.
