TIDA-01530: Reverse current protection solution.

Part Number: TIDA-01530
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM74610-Q1

Hi team

I checked function of Q5 and Q16 in TIDA-01530.

  • Q5 : "The MOSFET Q5 blocks this generated voltage from the VMOTOR supply."
  • Q16 :" The n-channel FET Q16 blocks the motor voltage from reaching the SH pin when the slow winding is not active"

Is it ok to use the Smart Diode (LM74610-Q1) and n-CH FET instead of Q5 and Q16 to configure the circuit as shown below?

  • It is possible this configuration will be fine, however, please note that the maximum voltage rating for the LM74610-Q1 is 45V for 2 ms.  The TIDA-01530 design uses 60V MOSFETs to block the generated voltage on the slow winding when the fast winding is active.  If voltages higher than 45V are generated on the slow winding, this will violate the absolute maximum ratings of the LM74610-Q1, regardless of the voltage rating of the MOSFET used in the Smart Diode circuit (Q1 in your figure above).  Also, the MOSFET used in the Smart Diode configuration must be rated for the current and voltage expected in the wiper application, so this device will be similar to the n-channel MOSFET Q5 in the TIDA-01530 design.

It seems this configuration replaces the small MOSFET Q16 and resistor R54 in the TIDA-01530 design with the LM74610-Q1 and the associated capacitor.  This may not be more cost effective than the original design.
