WEBENCH® Tools/BQ78350-R1: BMS design

Part Number: BQ78350-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76930

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

I want to design a BMS system of  8x6(i.e. 8 series cell and 6 parallel string of it).

For 8 series cell i want to use bq78350-r1 with bq76930. so i have to use 6 bq76930 for 6 parallel strings

My ques is how to control(or take data) these six bq76930 from a single companion controller to get data in BMS software?

  • Hi Anil,

If you are using a single battery that is 8s6p, you can use one BQ76930 + one BQ78350-R1. The number of cells in parallel does not impact the protection and gauging features of the device as long as the Design Capacity parameter is updated in the BQ78350-R1 data flash.

However, if you are monitoring 6 separate batteries (each 8s1p), you will need a different monitor and controller for each. One BQ78350-R1 cannot work with multiple BQ76930 devices. One MCU can interact with multiple BQ78350-R1 + BQ76930 pairs. The BQ78350-R1 can be configured with different SMBus addresses.

    Best regards,

  • Sir, Suggest me which MCU should i use to control atleast 6 BQ78350-R1?

  • Hi Anil,

This is a good question for the MCU forum on E2E: https://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/

Each BQ78350-R1 can be configured for a different SMBus address (this is programmable in data flash), so theoretically you could get away with an MCU with one I2C port. However, this would likely be slow to read information from all 6 devices. This really depends on your systems needs. If you can describe what you need clearly, you can ask the MCU forum for a recommendation.

    Best regards,

    Matt
