PMP5291: Charging 3 18650 batteries in parallel

Part Number: PMP5291

Hello,

(1) Are three batteries connected in parallel considered as a single cell? If that's the case, then PMP5291 can be used to charge the battery, right?

(2) The customer wants to charge the batteries at 5A. I believe 5A is too high and can cause damage to the battery. Can you please advise maximum safe charging current?

Thank you for your help.

  • Hi Elisha,

Thanks for you post. Let me try to answer the questions:

    1. Usually if the batteries are connected in parallel they can be charged as a single cell.  There needs to be protection between them of course, but in general they can be considered as 1 cell. PMP5291 will work to charge this type of battery.

    2. The standard 18650 cell has a capacity between 2-3Ahr, meaning that if you have 3 in parallel you have 6-9Ahr. It is perfectly safe to charge Li-Ion cells with a 1C rate (meaning that you can charge the full capacity in 1 hour). So charging with 5A would be no issue in this case.

    Thanks,

    Robert
