TIDA-01627: TPS65987D starts communication before BQ25703A turns ON

Part Number: TIDA-01627
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987D, BQ25703

Hello,

I'am writing to ask about TIDA-01627.  Question is related to this post on the power management forum:

Description:

I have got a custom charger board based on TIDA01627. I programmed TPS665987D based on this document:

The problem is circuit is not charging connected battery. I have checked I2C signal lines, TPS is trying to communicate with BQ but it does not response. Further investigation revealed that communication process starts before CHRG_OK signal gets up. Like in TIDA, BQ's CHRG_OK pin is connected to GPIO1 pin of TPS. I assume, problem is too early start of communication process. Problem occurs both when battery is present or not. I would like to ask how do I program TPS to be triggered by CHRG_OK signal to start communication.

Best regards,

Wojciech Maćkowiak

  • Hi Wojciech,

In TIDA-01627, the CHRG_OK pin was not used in the design. The BQ25703 was always powered by the connected batteries and would always be ready for I2C messaging. The TPS65987D is unable to be triggered from an external GPIO and will instead be triggered from PD communication events on the Type-C Port.

    Thank you,
    Eric
