Efficiency of TPS54160

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54160

Hi,

I am trying to design the schematic using TPS54160 by SwitcherPro.

The condition is following.

Vin=12V

Vout=3.3V

Iout=1.49A

Fs=1200KHz

This condition is the same condition in TPS54160 datasheet.

The result of SwitcherPro is as below.

I think the loss in U1 is too big.

This efficiency is worse by 10% than the efficiency in datasheet discription.

If there are any problem in SwitcherPro, I would like to know the way to improve it?

  • Hi Kazu-san,

    Thank you for identifying this issue. I can reproduce your observations. This looks like a problem with the TPS54160 power model. I will ask the SwitcherPro development team to reexamine their power equations for this device. While there should be closer
    correlation between the measured data in the datasheet and SwitcherPro, please keep in mind that SwitcherPro will usually give you more pessimistic efficiency curves because it uses worst case DCR of the inductor and pessimistic Rds for the power fets in the device. When you measure one board in the lab, you are unlikely to get a board where all components are at their worst case.

    Regards,
    Michael

  • Hi Michael-san,

    Thank you for you reply.

    I hope that TPS54160 power model will be updated soon.

    Best Regards,
